Question 1

What license is required to drive on Guam?

Accepted Answer

A valid driver's license from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, an EU member country, Palau, the FSM or the Marshall Islands lets you drive on Guam for up to 30 days after arrival without an International Driving Permit (90 days for a license issued in the United States). For licenses from any other country, please check with us before you travel. You must present the original license — copies or photos on your phone are not accepted.

Question 2

At what age can I rent a car in Guam?

Accepted Answer

Anyone 18 or older can rent a car with us. It's common for rental companies to charge an extra fee for renters aged 21-24, but we don't apply any age-based surcharge. When you arrive, please bring the main driver's original driver's license.

Question 3

Are there additional fees based on age?

Accepted Answer

There is no additional charge based on age for renters 18 or older. Some companies add a surcharge for young drivers aged 21-24, but JAPAN Rent-A-Car Guam does not — everyone pays the same rate regardless of age.

Question 4

What do I need to rent a car?

Accepted Answer

Please bring the driver's own license, a credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or Diners), and a passport. If the driver doesn't have a credit card, a traveling companion's card can be used instead. If the driver and the person paying are different people, both of their passports are needed. Cash, debit cards, and prepaid credit cards are not accepted. If no one in your group has a credit card, see how to rent with cash.

Question 5

Can I rent without a credit card?

Accepted Answer

Even without a credit card, a cash rental is possible if you take all three of CDW (Collision Damage Waiver), ZDW (Zero Deductible Waiver), and NOC (Non-Operation Charge Waiver) and leave a $150 deposit. CDW runs $17.00-$22.00 per 24 hours depending on the vehicle class, while ZDW and NOC are flat rates of $10.00 and $7.00 per 24 hours, regardless of class.

Question 6

What is included in the car rental fee?

Accepted Answer

Except for a few package plans, the rental fee covers the vehicle itself and automobile liability insurance (LP). If someone is injured, LP covers up to $100,000 for any one person, capped at $300,000 total per accident; property damage is covered up to $50,000 per accident. Anything beyond that, and additional coverage such as CDW (Collision Damage Waiver), ZDW (Zero Deductible Waiver), and NOC (Non-Operation Charge Waiver), is available as an option.

Question 7

Are there any restrictions on installing a child safety seat?

Accepted Answer

Child seats go in the back seats only. Guam law calls for a seat matched to your child's age and weight — an Infant Seat for 0-1 years or up to 9kg, a Child Seat for 1-4 years or 9-18kg, and a Booster Seat for ages 4-11 up to 145cm — and each type rents for a flat $5.00/24 hrs. *Please install the seat yourself and return it to the counter when you bring the car back. The number of seats a vehicle can hold varies by class — check the Vehicles & Prices page for details.

Question 8

Is the cost of gasoline included in the rental fee?

Accepted Answer

Except for a few package plans, fuel is at your own expense, and the car should go out and come back with a full tank. Returning it less than full means we bill from our fee schedule, which runs high once the handling charge is added — filling it yourself first is much cheaper. Gas stations on Guam are mostly self-service. See the How to Refuel page for step-by-step instructions.

Question 9

Do you offer hotel or airport pick-up and drop-off?

Accepted Answer

We run a free shuttle between our Main Office and hotels in the Tumon-Tamuning area — see the list of hotels we cover. We don't pick up directly from the airport, but the Main Office is about an 8-minute drive, or roughly a 10-minute taxi ride, from Guam International Airport. If you arrive by taxi from the airport, we'll take $15 off your rental — just show the taxi receipt when you settle your bill. No receipt, no cashback. After you return the car, we'll drive you to the airport or your hotel at no charge.

Question 10

Can you bring a rental car to my hotel?

Accepted Answer

We don't deliver cars to hotels — the paperwork is handled at our Main Office. If you're staying in the Tumon-Tamuning area, check the list of hotels we cover for our free shuttle to and from the Main Office.

Question 11

Is there a place to park my car at night?

Accepted Answer

Every hotel on Guam offers free parking, so there's no need to look for street parking — just use your hotel's lot. As a general precaution, don't leave valuables visible in the car; take them with you or lock them away.

Question 12

Is the rental car an automatic transmission (AT) car?

Accepted Answer

Every car in our fleet is automatic transmission (AT). We don't carry any manual (MT) models, so drivers who only hold an automatic-only license, or who simply aren't confident with a clutch, can rent with no worries.

Question 13

Can I specify the car model and color?

Accepted Answer

We can't take requests for a specific model or color. Bookings are made by class — A-Special, A-class, RV-class, and so on — and the actual vehicle is assigned from several models within that class on the day you pick up. We can't promise a particular model even if you have a favorite, so please keep that in mind. Example models for each class are listed on the Vehicles & Prices page.

Question 14

Are children included in the passenger capacity?

Accepted Answer

Yes — small children and babies are each counted as one passenger. Seating capacity runs from 4 to 8 depending on the vehicle class, so factor in anyone who'll need a child seat when choosing a class with enough room.

Question 15

Are rental cars non-smoking?

Accepted Answer

All of our rental cars are non-smoking. Even if you didn't smoke inside, if the car comes back with a smell strong enough that we can't send it out to the next customer, a one-day rental fee will apply — please keep this in mind.

Question 16

What insurance coverage is included in the rental fee?

Accepted Answer

The rental fee includes automobile liability insurance (LP). It pays up to $100,000 toward any one injured person and up to $300,000 in total for a single accident, plus up to $50,000 for damage to property. Anything beyond those limits, plus additional coverage such as CDW (Collision Damage Waiver), ZDW (Zero Deductible Waiver), and NOC (Non-Operation Charge Waiver), is available as an option.

Question 17

What is the cost if I have an accident?

Accepted Answer

A $150 accident-handling legal fee applies whenever there's an accident, regardless of what coverage you're carrying. Beyond that, skipping CDW and ZDW leaves you on the hook for vehicle repairs (up to $50,000) including the first $1,000, and skipping NOC leaves you responsible for the loss-of-use charge ($250 if the car is still driveable, $400 if it isn't). Go without any optional coverage at all, and you could be covering nearly everything yourself — repairs, passenger medical costs, the works — which is why we recommend adding it.

Question 18

Can I raise the liability insurance limit included in the rental fee?

Accepted Answer

The liability coverage built into the rental fee — up to $100,000 per injured person and $300,000 total per accident for injuries, up to $50,000 per accident for property damage — cannot be increased. *We have never had an accident that exceeded this limit. If you'd like extra peace of mind anyway, consider adding CDW, ZDW, or NOC.

Question 19

Is there a contact point in Japan?

Accepted Answer

We don't have a dedicated contact point inside Japan. For bookings or questions, please reach us by email or at our Guam number, +1-671-647-6000.

Question 20

Can I drive a rental car to Ritidian Beach?

Accepted Answer

The area around Ritidian Beach has a history of crime targeting tourists, the roads are rough enough to risk a flat tire, and cell coverage can drop out entirely in an emergency. For safety, we ask that you not drive our rental cars there. If you'd still like to visit, a local guided tour is a safer way to go.
